Hi BJ Dierkes,
I checked my system and it has exactly the same version as yours. I did not realize in the first place that libxml was a external dependancy with such impact on the system.
The discrepancy with Windows, and Ubuntu caught my attention but I suppose my issue lies somewhere else.

Actually I found that the bug could still happen with Ubuntu as well so eventually this is a PHP problem but definitely not a IUS issue.

  ph53u-xml build upon libxml2 2.6.7 instead of  2.7.x

Bug description:
  I am running into PHP application issues  with DOM on centos 5.5
  x86_64.

  I installed php53u for PHP version 5.3.6 
  I found out that php53u-xml is build upon libxml2 v.2.6.7 whereas both ubuntu and windows version of PHP 5.3.6 are built upon libxml2 v 2.7.6 and 2.7.7
