Matt White, as per http://download.lenovo.com/express/ddfm.html an update to your BIOS is available (2.59). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate does it change anything?  If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

Bug description:
  My touchpad only responds about 10% of the time I use it. It's
  extremely intermittent and unreliable. I use a Lenovo Thinkpad T530
  with Ubuntu 14.04, kernel version 3.13.0-29. This problem has
  persisted since the previous version of Ubuntu, although I didn't make
  a note of what kernel versions. I'm not exactly sure when it started
  since I use an external mouse most of the time. My Thinkpad has one of
  those "pencil eraser" type mouses in the middle of the keyboard as
  well, and it works just fine. All mouse buttons work fine as well.
