[Bug 1332615] [NEW] 'ALPS Touchpad' incorrectly detected as PS/2 mouse in 'Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 14'

Public bug reported:

Laptop Model: Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 14
Model Name: 20308

Touchpad Manufacturer: ALPS - listed as such in dmesg, not confirmed and
not specified by manufacturer

The touchpad is incorrectly detected by the kernel during Ubuntu 14.04
x64 installation. The touchpad never worked correctly. It is only able
to register button clicks and move the mouse pointer. Scroll, taps,
multitouch, etc are not available and do not show as available option.
"Synclient -l" returns "Couldn't find synaptics properties. No synaptics
driver loaded?" Actually, anywhere I looked, the touchpad is just listed
as a PS/2 Generic Mouse.

I also used dkms to install the extra ALPS v7 kernel module from he1per
/psmouse-dkms-alpsv7 on GitHub. Still, the kernel was not able to detect
the touchpad and enable any of its functions.

I have included the required debug logs in the attached
debug_logs.tar.gz file.

This bug has been confirmed on AskUbuntu by several users and several
unanswered support requests.
