Marc Luijckx, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please boot into a live environment via http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ and execute via a terminal:
apport-collect 1373336

As well, could you login via switching to Ctrl+Alt+F1 and find the
updates specifically that were applied on Sept 22?

Title:
  Desktop not loading after password entry

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  After automatic update Sept 22, my ubuntu will not go past password-
  entry screen. After I enter password it goes back to login-screen.

  Tried the former kernel also: 3.13.0-35, but same problem. Recovery
  mode through GRUB also does not work (all kernels, two)

  apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade did not help
  either

  PLEASE help
