you only reinforce my point. I mostly choose opensource/freeware
programs because i know they are better than commercial stuff because
written by their users. I just want a system that i can keep using
knowing that it will not suddenly become obsolete.

Hopefully you can at least keep them compatible if you must split
and make sure versions remain compatible. KiCAD is a nice program

Not only hobbyist, please... we build more than ~1000 units with gerbers
generated by pcbnew (mostly 2 and 4 layer stuff) but we have no money
for 'big vendors'; and most low cost cads (to say some names: eagle and
ares) are piles of junk. Also not necessarily big vendors make good
products... if you look around the net EE (expedition express) is
nicknamed Endless Errors :D
