I think it's an excellent feature; the links are likely to be good since this is obviously checked and sent just before production. Of course I will still keep my own copies due to the issues you mention, plus in long term support I have found that manufacturers happily delete documentation forever when they obsolete a product - it's a much bigger job to design a replacement component/board when some of the chips no longer have documentation.
