This is currently the best option.

However we also can think to more layers (for the kicad V5 version only) like:
- a paired auxiliary fab layer (call it assembly layer if you want)
- a fp doc layer, specific to the footprint editor (not seen and not plotted in board editor) to add
info useful only in the fp editor( like dimensions for instance and comments)

Just food for thought.
