What if the breadcrumbs had some kind of visual icon or element that  
always started it, like the chevron?  Put that at the start of the  
breadcrumb trail so that if you see only the chevron, you know  you're  
at the top level?  E.g.

>> Evolution >> series trunk

at the top...
