Sorry, but I do not think this idea is justified.

What does one mean by "real name." If I call myself Roly Farley, does
that constitute a real name?

There are many reasons not to use a person's real actual name. For
example, gender, ethnicity, relation to another person, and family.
But there may be privacy reasons, and I do think privacy is an
important issue. To me, privacy is an important aspect of free
software; for example the available source code and resulting peer
review destroys virtually all possible backdoors. A person may not
want to have their online identity connected to their real-world
identity for many ethical reasons.

I can partially (I do, however, understand some of the arguments
against this) that a person may feel less comfortable working with a
person whose name is ghhsgsa. This plausible, only because it gives
less of a human feeling and may make a person who is suited to a
professional business-like environment uncomfortable and feel less
productive.

But I disagree with a "real name" as in the actual name in real life
that is used in one's passport, etc. If I call myself Roly Farley (or
a decent realistic name) and it is the same name I use in my "online
identity", specifically when related to the free software community,
my name should be just as acceptable as a real actual name.

Just to take an example. If one refers to himself/herself as Roly
Farley (or a decent realistic name) throughout the online world
whenever there is something important involved, should that person use
his/her actual real name, even when there is no mention of the real
name on the Internet, and even when there is a history and background
of the online identity that has been built around Roly Farley? How
would one know that isn't the person's real name, especially if that
online identity has a background?

I take this quite seriously, because a project that does not
understand is being hypocritical and inconsiderate.
