Sorry, missunderstood you. You cannot use transparent PNGs directly.
They don't render propperly. I'm using that "clearlooks" style too, and
it's opaque. Look:


Trying to use a transparent, panel renders bad the alpha channel:




Trying to use a fixed size, each applet (taskbar, clock, etc) redraws
again the background repeatedly:




If you want to use another one rather from the theme's, just use the
GIMP or Inkscape and produce something like this:

  (a simple cylinder)

It's a code limitation. We can't do anything more.
