Re: [PPC] Lubuntu 13.04 video issues on an iBook G4

@Devon Tourond

Hi. I have the other Mid-2005 model iBook G4--the 12" 1.33GHz model. Except for the size of the display and the speed of the processor, it is the same computer. They share the same video card.

I installed 13.04 from the live CD about 6 weeks ago. I use it daily, and havn't had any real problems. It has been rock-solid stable, for me. I'm not running a dual boot system. Only Lubuntu 13.04 is installed on the hard drive.

The only real issue I had was getting the live CD to run. For that I had to use the boot parameter at the yaboot prompt:

live video=radeonfb:1024x768-32

Well, at first sound didn't work, and wifi didn't work, and the Mac startup sound didn't work, but those are all documented issues, and were relatively easy to fix.

I am a Linux newbie, but a long-time Mac user (some would call me a dinosaur), but if I can do anything to help you, let me know.

Also, I've been playing with the 13.10 Saucy live CD on this iBook and several other Powermacs and it runs the same as 13.04. In fact, I haven't found any differences, at all.

I'd just like to let everyone know that Lubuntu 13.04 doesn't work like it should on an iBook G4. The installation went fine, but the login screen is messed up. I've included a picture of what I saw on the first boot immediately after the installation finished.

I've tried to type in the password and press Enter, but that doesn't do anything.

When I installed 12.10, I had similar graphics issues after installation. The last version that worked was 12.04.

After looking on everymac, I've found out that the iBook G4 I've got has a "4X AGP ATI Mobility Radeon 9550 graphics with 32 MB of DDR SDRAM."
