Lars, the same problem happened to me when I tried an alternate install on
my Mac Mini.

The end result superficially looks identical whether I'm trying to boot
from a recent LiveCD or install from an alternate disc. I wind up on the
text Plymouth screen right after it changes color from cyan to black, and
the loading dots keep changing color from white to orange and back, and
that continues indefinitely. I let it run overnight a few nights ago just
to see if it were some drastic slowdown, but it wasn't. I figure 8 hours is
enough time to try to get a computer to do something before forcing a
shutdown.
