I guess I just changed my opinion towards this:
If you are watching a movie or looking at photos, you don’t want the
cursor and notifications in the way … if it is actively being used
because you’re in a workflow, you don’t want to be annoyed either.
The annoyance is the major disadvantage and may well be the knock-out
argument. Basically, users don’t want and should not be annoyed by any
notification, neither in the notification area nor on the mouse
cursor.
The small advantage of higher visibility is nullified by the fact that
to not be annoying, the notifications have to be limited to a very
small set. That does not justify creating another place for
notifications.
