Re: OpenERP 7.0: Call for translators!

Question from the Swedish translation team:

Will all translations done for server/addons and version 6.1 be copied to 7.0? We have thousands of hours of transkateing booth old bad translations and new with focus at 2012. The state of trunk (and now 7.0) are mainly 2010.

Please advice us what to do:

Hi everyone,

The translation templates were just updated with the latest terms, including:

- addition of several missing terms in the web client, thanks to a contribution by Csaba Tóth [1] - removal of duplicated constraints messages, previously copied in all modules that shared a common object with constraints, causing about 400 useless duplicated terms [2]
- update of all templates according to the latest changes
- most l10n_* modules that don't require translations were hidden from the Launchpad translation interface and statistics (translation files are preserved if they existed)

There is still time to complete the translations of the main modules in time for the release, especially if you can coordinate with other translators. See also the links in my previous email (quoted below) if you would like to get started or need more info.

Currently, the top 5 translations for OpenERP Addons are *Chinese* (Simplified), *Dutch*, *Portuguese*, *Romanian* and *Japanese*, and the next ones are very close at 5-6k terms to translate.

For what it's worth, Erwin van der Ploeg (a major contributor to the Dutch translation) mentioned it took him roughly 10 hours to translate the first 1000 new 7.0 terms, with the help of Launchpad's suggestions[3]. The top 10 languages have a good team of translators, so they should be able to be ready in time for the final 7.0 release!

Way to go!

Dear OpenERP Contributors and Translators,

A beta version of OpenERP 7.0 was published last week, and the features and
the terms to translate can now be considered frozen.
It is therefore a good time to start working on the translations for OpenERP 7.0/trunk, in order to be able to complete them in time for the final release
(normally due before the end of this year).

We have just performed a pass of cleanup and synchronization of the
translations templates on the main OpenERP projects, and the current set of
terms to translate can be considered ready for translation.

The total number of terms to translate has slightly decreased from ~18'800 to
~18'200, but there are about *25%* of new/updated terms (due to the new
configuration settings, new modules, reviewed/simplified messages, etc.)
That's quite a lot of work even for languages that were 100% translated in 6.1.
(Note: Launchpad statistics are updated every morning around 6:00am UTC)

The top 5 translations for `addons` are currently *Portuguese*, *Romanian*, *Spanish*, *Japanese* and *Dutch* - and one of these translations has been
started from scratch in 2012 - Way to go!

The trunk (7.0) series is now set as the main focus for translations.

Here are direct links to the projects that have to be translated:

If you need help, translating and organizing translation teams is explained in
details in the contributor documentation:
http://doc.openerp.com/v6.1/contribute/07_improving_translations.html

Translating from zero is a huge task, but keep in mind that Launchpad's
translation interface offers automatic suggestions from its 26000+ projects!

If you feel you won't manage to do it in time for v7.0, do not hesitate
to coordinate with new translators from your country, for example invite
those who have suggested many translations to team up with you.

Finally, do not worry if you have not completed 100% of the translations in time for the release: updated translations are always incrementally included during the life-cycle of each stable version. So focus on the most important
ones first.

There's still time to have version 7.0 ready for most people in the world! :-)

Thank you all for making OpenERP a truly global project!
