Re: OpenERP and Business Intelligence
Hi,
i have checked it and i like it.
PROS:
- In most cases it will cover essential reporting demand of most small
medium business.
- in all other bi tools i know (palo, pentaho), it is quite complex to
extract and load data from external system, to design olap cube, to design
reports for some basic report demand every company has, f.e. to analyse
simple measures like sold qty or revenues for some simple dimensions like
salesmen, products, time.
- it is probably possible to cover up to 70% - 80% of demanded reports (for
SMB).
- i agree that focussing on one technology i also expect better acceptance
of the people who guide SMB managers to use this reports. However it was
indeed not possible to see how complex it will be to bridge the 20-30% gap.
- individual BI projects are normally expensive, in a lot of cases too
expensive for customers with 5-50 employees => integrated Light BI is much
better than nothing for this companies.
CONS:
- specific tools, f.e. olap cubes are eventually more flexible. They allow
to relate data, f.e. data from sales + project management in one cube
snapshot.
- the design of grid reports is easy and in well known environments, f.e.
in excel spreadsheets (or something which looks very similar).
- integrated bi reporting tools (like in the runbot branch) mostly doesn't
allow to calculate cells like in spreadsheets.
- i expect the larger the company the less is coverage of report demand.
Wishlist:
- allow to shoot snapshots (=pasting visible grid in a integrated
web-spreadsheet)
-integrate the possibility to add columns and lines like in a spreadsheet
- integrate the possibility to calculate cells (f.e. relations of income +
costs) in a flexible grid (like a web spreadsheet tool).
- allow flexible creation of individual spreadsheet reports.
- save indiviual spreadsheet reports in a workbook.
- allow splashing (for planning) => Create any muldimensional grid on x + y
axe (like it already does), representing the values from openerp database.
Create a mirrored / shadowed report. Allow over-writing of any cell. Let
the system ask if system should distribute the value to x + y axes, by
splashing functionality.
- Allow to save the splashed data. This functionality should allow top-down
planning, splitting the edited value over all dimensions in the grid to all
children elements.
- Finally allow editing values of children levels.
- Allow fixing of parent levels (= re-calculation of values on the same
level)
- Finally allow to export either to a integrated web spreadsheet,
eventually google spreadsheet or excel.
- The integrated spreadsheet should be something like etherpad integration,
f.e. like ethercalc <http://ethercalc.net/#about>.
- integrate web statistics from google analytics (as reporting part of new
web-cms)
I hope the wishlist was not too confusing, i remember from
palo<http://www.jedox.com/assets/pdf/factsheet/Factsheet_Jedox_Web_eng.pdf>,
that people liked to work in spreadsheets and to do simultaniously
top-down, bottom-up planning.
