Re: FIFO - Accounting Plans

Dear all,

I'm not sure whether this has been brought to attention. A couple of years ago, Thai OpenERP community had developed a FIFO costing method for OpenERP v5. Maybe the effort can start basing on that. Here is the link to the exact file: http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~openerp-thai-team/openerp-thai/openobject-addons-thai/view/head:/ac_account_thai/account_thai.py <http://bazaar.launchpad.net/%7Eopenerp-thai-team/openerp-thai/openobject-addons-thai/view/head:/ac_account_thai/account_thai.py>
Look for update_fifo_cost_price method.

Cheers,

Quentin & Fabrice,

I need to see if you were able to determine how OpenERP would like to proceed with collaboration for FIFO. My client requires it for their implementation and will be wrapping up their project shortly. I need to proceed with this development and would like to follow the correct path.

    Hello everyone,

i think Fabrice explained the R&D vision/roadmap clearly and
correctly: we don't plan to work on FIFO for the next version as
it doesn't match our aim which is 'to simplify openerp and make it
more usable'. Though, it doesn't exclude totally our collaboration
on developments driven by our community and i'd be glad to
participate. But this is not of my resort. Fabrice, we will have
to discuss this point with Antony next week.

    Thanks.
    Best regards,

    David,

I wouldn't turn it like that -- saying that we don't want to
focus on companies that are bigger than QB's market (after all QB
Pro doesn't allow more than 25 users from what I heard), and I
can totally understand that manufacturers of 50 employees/users
might need FIFO (and this is part of our target). What I'm saying
is that improving usability as a whole not only was necessary but
also has a much bigger impact on OERP's market acquisition than
one additional functionality. This is why it is our priority for
now. I'm not saying we are against it or that we will never want
    to work on it.

Also, the score of the FIFO feature on the feedback page speaks
    for itself.

What I agree with as well is that we need better procedures to
make OERP SA collaborate with the community when it comes to
developing a feature and making sure that you are doing it the
right way before doing it wrong entirely. I believe it will be
one of the major topics that community members will want to talk
about with us. In that regard, R&D has to come up with a process,
and stick to it. I will most probably have a better vision on
this after my stay in Belgium.

    Best,

    Hi Fabrice,

Thanks for responding and understood. So what I read into this is
    - other successful small business suites -aka Quickbooks- out of
the box don't offer FIFO/LIFO - only weighted average. So that is
OpenERP's target market. And like Quickbooks - an additional
module will be required to implement FIFO.

I will tell you that we have to solve the FIFO issue for some of
our clients. Viewed as a basic need. FIFO is readily adopted in
many small and medium businesses (like manufacturing) here in the
US. I'll find a statistic somewhere as well on the adoption %
just so you know as well in your discussions with prospects.

In the interest of not ophaning customers on a specific NPG FIFO
version we will try to provide some community/gathering/voice
leadership in getting input into the design. Hopefully, Quentin
will agree to participate in this as well as I know his expertise
and perspective would be valued - so that whatever is designed
has visibility from OpenERP and has a "chance" to become certified.

Certainly I think in the community FIFO is needed so we will see
what the demand may be/and willingness to jointly develop/or at
    least design.

Thanks and have a good weekend.

    Hi David,

Last time I heard Fabien talking about it, he said that our
priority for now was to make OpenERP more easy to use and
intuitive. From what I know, there is no plan on our side to add
FIFO/LIFO anytime soon. At this point, we prefer to work on
making OERP very easy for small businesses that have basic needs
    than adding functionalities.

As for your question about having R&D involved in the conception
to make sure the community is going in the direction that R&D
would encourage, I'll let Quentin reply.

    Bonjour Quentin,

    Cordialement
