A similar issue is mentioned at their site:
http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=105401 So it seems the
VLC team is already aware of it.

The test results are as follows:
 - on OS X 10.6 with VLC version 2.0.0 up to 2.0.3 the playback works, it crashes with 2.0.4
 - on OSX 10.8 with VLC version 2.0.3 the playback works, it crashes with 2.0.4
The working VLC executables can be found at http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/2.0.3/macosx/

Bug description:
  We need to add note that osx users need vlc containing 32/64 bit
  binaries.

  openlp is on osx 32bit binary and 64bit-only vlc build won't work.

  From http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html  users need the
  '32/64 bits Intel' build.
