You must use libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio , it's necessary for MLT and MLT is the motor of The preview. 
Check all your dependencies like here http://openshotusers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=33 if you want not having some problems.

Bug description:
There is no sound when previewing a video. I didn't have the audio on the track muted, and pavucontrol showed no sound coming out of the app.
