I quote Gour: in/out points are useful *before* you put the clip in the
timelime. After this, obvioulsy, you can use cutter tool or resize tool.

For me the best solution is the kdelive solution that is the same of FinalCut and other NLEs.
Cinerella on the other hand force you to do a "clip" and then  drag the clip in the timeline, while Kdenlive makes things faster and simpler.

Bug description:
  Hiya!

  It would be nice to have support for In/Out points - similar to
  Cinelerra's [ ] so that one can attach effect/transition to the region
  between the two - the region would have to be highlighted,of course.

  Moreover, having In/Out points would enable one to render just part of
  the highlighed region of the audio/video track.
