John Purrier has another proposal submitted dealing with how OpenStack handles different formats for VM images and virtual appliances. The full proposal can be read here:

John sent an email to the mailing list about this proposal but there wasn't any additional discussion on the thread (https://lists.launchpad.net/openstack/msg00181.html). There was related discussion on the thread Ewan kicked off on Glance's x-image-meta-type header (https://lists.launchpad.net/openstack/msg00205.html).

Please review the proposal and respond to the list with either approval of the proposal or concerns and requested changes.
