dan i hit the same wall when trying to get dwm as the default wm few months
ago.. something forces xfce4 and if its not present it goes into fwm.

i know i manage to get awesome to be the default some 5 months ago but was
never able to make and .iso with other than xfce4 as default.

my guess is gdm and next time i will try removing it from the build..
