Aha! So we are using the following colors:

- disabled text: GrayText
- toolbar background: ThreeDFace
- debug text: #999

What's the culprit here? According to the CSS 2.0 spec, these are
*user-defined* colors! I guess in Opera, they are configured in some weird way,
I need to find out how to fix that (I swear I'm using the factory-defaults,
though!).

By the way, GrayText is defined as "text on inactive UI buttons" and ThreeDFace
is the color for "3D elements".
