Re: [Funding] When to start?

Step 1 is to find a noble cause for the funding to go towards. Put yourself
in Company X's shoes: why should they give RocketsOSI $500 towards their
project (which is?) instead of to Engineers Without Borders trying to
purify water in the developing world? If we want to purchase 100 usb drives
to give free software to school kids so they can do their homework, that's
a good project start.

Step 2: identify organizations that are aligned with the goals of the
project. If we're fundraising to bring a speaker on Open Internet
Technology to talk, then we can talk to someone like Hanson Inc. Promoting
LibreOffice to freshmen? Maybe ask a company that contributes that project
or to similar projects.

Step 3: Do what you said you were going to do. Student orgs have received
hundreds from large companies in the past and failed to deliver on their
promises. Those companies will no longer donate to that group (and are less
likely to donate to others from UT) for at least as long as that corporate
rep is still employed there (5+ years). Photos, articles, etc are good
documentation to share with your corp donors. Recognizing their donation in
an event program or webpage is the least you can do; inviting them to
participate or advertise jobs/software/services is a good idea too.
