There is a report that downloading DamnSmall linux on a USB drive and
booting the laptop up with it takes the same effect as the WinXP
trick, but much faster and less invasive.

It has also been reported that one only needs the first WinXP
installation steps, that don't leave any permanent change in the
system, to be able to switch on/off the graphics card.

After that, installing Ubuntu and using Eva's patched sony module
(also detailed in the website) should give you a working system.
