People have experienced problems with Xorg CPU going up through the roof
(100% CPU usage).  Check with gnome-system-monitor or top in a terminal
to see if you CPU is maxed out.

That might drive your laptop to become hotter than usual, and would keep
the fans going.

If you experience this, check for existing open bugs in Ubuntu.
