Re: Ubuntu 10.4 install on vaio z12 1600x900 display -Want to help

Thanks. I just got the nvidia card working with the kernels etc. from Adam.
I have not altered my BIOS, not sure if I dare do it. Perhaps it's not so hard but I still haven't
done any investigation on how to do it.

When I try to start with intel card I can get the text command login but when I run /etc/rc.local.moved or actually just manually do: "modprobe i915 modeset=1" the laptop display goes black and the external display is
activated.

Perhaps I need a special xorg.conf file or ?
According to this page (http://0xc0dedbad.com/blog/2010/01/30/dual-boot-linux-and-windows-7-on-sony-vaio-z/) previous z models has problems with displays EDID data. Perhaps this could be the issue here?

Anyway if I can help making this work I am prepared to do it.

Martin I'm talking about Intel card. Nvidia works like a charm except
brthiness control.

It seems Adam fix is working at 1900x1080 resolution, but not at 1600x900.

on a VPNZ12, apart from the know video problems:
- touchpad/keyboard needs to be fixed with the kernel parameters, but
they work properly after that
- wifi works out of the box
- webcam works out of the box
- I don't know about raid (I have a non-ssd Z)
- WAN doesn't work out of the box and I still have to find if it can
be fixed... I'll play with it soon

1) What are the large remaining known issues? I've read a lot of
material
now, including following this list lately, and I get the impression
that
it's graphics cards and raid booting.
I have to admit that I haven't even tried the WWAN card or the
webcam,
but I believe that they both work. The RAID controller works too, but
you HAVE
t use grub2.

The issue is with the graphics, though there are workarounds. If
you boot
an old kernel first then you can use the NVidia card without problems.
The
Intel card seems to work ( for me at least ) when booting a KUbuntu
live CD,
but then doesn't work if you boot using Grub2. I've managed to get it
running
on my machine with a custom kernel, with i7 and 1920x1080 panel, so if
you
have those then it can be made to work and you can use either video
card.

2) Can someone explain the default raid setup? I think it is Raid 0
which
allows multiple hard disks to appear as a single unit? Mine is the
128GB
model which I think means two 64GB disks. And this is a problem for
grub
2? Is that the only incompatibility?
Mine had 4x64Gb drives in RAID0, but other models have 2x128Gb
also in
RAID0. Unless you get rid of the RAID set-up, you HAVE to use grub2.

3) What is the definitive howto document? I apologize but it is not
100%
clear to me from the launchpad group information what the starting
point is
to installation on the Z. I assume simply booting from vanilla Lucid
is
not really the starting point.
There isn't really one at the moment for the VPC-Z, and my
kernel
solution is only a hack! However, if you have the same processor and
panel as
me then you should be able to boot the KUbuntu lucid live DVD out of
the box
and get the system installed, and then get my kernel on it to have a
working
system. There are a couple of others on here with different
processors/panels
trying to get it working without success ( yet. )

Adam.

Thanks,
Justin
