VPCZ1390X Success!! (almost)
The bizarre audio problems I encountered have been (mostly) resolved.
Seems like the VPCZ13* sound architecture is close enough to the sony-vaio-tt to allow a module option patch to fix things.
I put a new file (must be done as root, of course):
/etc/modprobe.d/vaioz.conf
containing one line:
options snd-hda-intel model=sony-vaio-tt
On reboot audio mostly works, with the help of alsamixer from alsa-utils and pavucontrol from the package by the same name.
At this point I have (mostly) working audio. The speakers work, and switch over to the earphones when connected. The earphones I have are noise-cancelling ones from sony, and they have a microphone on each ear-bud. These microphones work, when selected via pavucontrol; the built-in microphones do not seem to. However, with these I can comfortably use skype for videoconferencing -- so from my perspective the vaio is now usable as my primary machine.
Any thoughts about the internal mic, external mics, and controlling the noise-cancelling features would be greatly appreciated.
Those who gave me tips -- thank you! I hope the archives of this exchange will make it easier for other linux vaio users.
