Re: status of graphics switch support in vanilla kernels
Hi there,
I am running Ubuntu Maverick on a sony-vaio z135GG ...with kernel from Natty
(2.6.38-2-generic). Kernel works for most of my hardware (have not tested
the fingerprint reader yet). But unlike Nicolas, lspci still list both
graphic cards although I am running with the stamina switch on ...
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT216 [GeForce GT
330M] (rev a2)
Because of the two cards present ... battery life is relatively poor when
running on battery.
So maybe, total success depends on the hardware model ...
Notes:
- machine is brand new (2 weeks old), bought in Singapore
- was previously using Adam's kernel 2.6.37-6-vaioz but had issues with kvm
(virtual machine would not shutdown properly, natty's kernel fixed the kvm
issue)
- as Justin mentioned, VGA output works fine with intel graphics (and should
work fine with the nvidia one)
- HDMI, probably only works with nvidia (under windows 7, it requires the
switch to speed mode)
I am a bit overwhelmed by the amount of information available in order to
run Linux on Sony Laptop Series Z, and in particular by the fact that some
of the information is no longer relevant, or is relevant only to a
particular model with a specific version of the kernel (as mentioned by
Nicolas, with 2.6.38, some/most kernel parameters are not needed anymore).
Is there a wiki somewhere where we could share our installation success
(mentioning laptop model and Linux version used) and how to replicate them
(for people who needs help with their hardware)?
