If your BIOS is not hacked, then you must use the acpi_osi kernel param with
your current install, right? If not, then I'm not sure what to suggest. I
just figured that anyone with a working install on Z12 would be using the
param.

What Vaio are you using?
I tried Natty alpha3 vi a Z12(1600x1280 screen). Not much luck. I don't
see anything at boot (screen remains blank), so I can't boot into the
live system. I might be able to install the same way i did with 10.10
but I don't want to ruin my mostly working system.
I recently tested alpha3 and I had the same problem, but only with nvidia
(I had speed switch set, and static switching via acpi_osi kernel param,
so booting directly from my working system to alpha3 live CD meant I was
still using static-switched nvidia). Rebooting into the live CD again
(such that acpi_osi was not in effect from previous boot) got me a
working system with presumably Intel. I haven't had a chance to play
further.
I'm pretty sure nvidia worked with alpha2 so there may have been a
regression. hmmm
