There is a sony-laptop module that already comes with the kernel so you need to either restart or do modprobe -r sony-laptop and then modprobe sony-laptop
When you do that  you can check the dmesg output and see if module tells you anything about the brightness control.
And finally, make sure you don't have something like acpi_backlight=vendor as a boot option because I think that might mess with it.
