So, Xedit comes with the calculator, and a few other tools in one very
small package.

I agree that Xedit is not the best... however your choices point out the
very issue.
All your choices are nice..
Leafpad is not good for me (no syntax highlighting)
Mousepad is Ok, but the syntax highlighting is not so good.
Gedit is best for basic text editor with syntax highlighting for me, I
would uninstall leafpad or mousepad...

Gedit is NOT for everyone.

Geany is amazing for a text editor.... but huge.

Xedit is good for the default *basic* editor until the user installs
their preferred one.
nano is fine for syntax highlighting.


At least... this is my 2 cents.  We all like different editors for
different reasons.  Most people would like Leafpad the best (who needs
syntax highlighting for notes?  besides people like me :D )
I always get rid of it.
