Hi,
I think figured out why the settings program was failing on the LiveCD.

When it starts it looks to make sure you have the backup file in existence.
If it doesn't it makes one, and then proceeds.

In your case it was not able to make the file.  So it kept trying and
trying and trying....
So... I will simply create it on the LiveCD.
