Strangely there haven't been any recent cups updates in Ubuntu 14.04:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/trusty/+source/cups/+changelog, do you have
any idea what update caused the problem? Have a look to see what
packages have been installed in this file: /var/log/apt/history.log

Please provide the "--debug" output on a terminal: system-config-printer
--debug 2>&1 | tee log.txt as requested in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/1325565/comments/2
to see if automatic USB printer driver detection works.
