Hello,
I agree that there are too many mentees without mentor and too many
mentors without mentee at the moment. Maybe we should make it more
clear how to pick a mentee and make someone responsible for keeping
the wiki page[1] up-to-date and clean. E.g. I'm not sure if the list
of mentee-candidates at the bottom of the wiki page[1] is still
relevant, or if we will use just the LP team[2] for keeping track of
the mentors and mentees.
What we need is: a clear set of guidelines -- also for picking a
mentee -- and someone who is ultimately responsible for the mentor
program, so we know who to talk to and there is someone who can do the
things that otherwise would be forgotten. Currently, I feel, some
things -- like responding to mentee-candidates -- aren't always done
because no one seems to have the responsibility for it, and therefore
everyone assumes someone else will do it or has done it.
I suggest to make two or more people responsible for 'triaging' mentor
requests, i.e. responding to people, redirecting them to the right
places if necessary and process correct applications. Once a month (or
more frequently?) they could send a list with mentee-candidates
waiting for a mentor, to assure the mentors don't forget people. As a
bonus the request date could be added so we know who is waiting the
longest.
I find that either 'Work in progress' should be removed from the wiki
page, or the project should be paused until the work has been done. We
shouldn't use an impartial project for welcoming people new to the
community.
