I'll second the recommendations for both OpenStreetMap and OpenCycleMap
(which is derived from OSM data).

I can personally recommend GpsMid (http://gpsmid.sourceforge.net/) which
I run on a Nokia E71 and up until recently I was running on a Nokia 6280
with Bluetooth GPS receiver.

It is written in Java, vector-based, so storage is quite efficient, has
the ability to upload GPS track logs directly to OSM, and allows for
live editing of the tags on ways. The downside is that the map data is
currently stored within the application rather than as external data
files, so getting an up-to-date map is a little more complex than it
really ought to be, but work is in progress to rectify that situation.
