This is probably because you installed from a memory card or stick. The
installer adds cdrom to the /etc/fstab file even though there isn't a cd
rom. This is a bug which Ferry is working on.
Fix:
sudo gedit /etc/fstab
The last line should be something something cdrom something something.
Comment it out (put a: # in front of the line)
Reboot and mounting should work

Bug description:
Version: Ubuntu eee 8.0.4.1
System: eeePC 1000H

When inserting a USB drive, the drive will show up on the right side dock, but an error message pops up stating that the drive could not be mounted, in looking at the details of the error, it is stating that Super-User privileges are required.
