Are you talking about Xubuntu 8.04.1 or Ubuntu 8.04.1 ?
To my understanding Xubuntu is a small-footprint Ubuntu member, designed for older computers. It might not consider wireless at all.
On my EEE I installed the standard Ubuntu, with the Gnome desktop.
