Re: [Question #46100]: Bluetooth Mouse

Question #46100 on Ubuntu Eee changed:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu-eee/+question/46100

Biggles requested for more information:
I am an absolute novice to Linux - a long-time XP user who has followed
the rise of Linux with interest.

I bought a shiny new Eee PC (901), XP version, and decided that this
would be the ideal platform to try Linux, but just prior to this
decision I bought a shiny new Microsft Bluetooth mouse.

I read the article Linux is not Windows and found it fascinating and
thought provoking, so am trying very hard not to be just another Linux
basher standing on a copy of XP! But I'm struggling just a little and my
Bluetooth experiences are indicative of how I'm feeling right now - but
I'm prepared to learn and persevere because the little I have
experienced of this O/S on my EeePC is really encouraging, but...

I have been frustrated trying to get my Bluetooth mouse to work. I have
followed and tried all of the many references I have found on the Net,
but still no luck.

I found the MAC address of my mouse, altered the hcid.conf file
I restarted the bluetooth subsystem
FRound that when I restarted the system it would not recognize my mouse, so I then followed some trouble shooting advice, which was to edit a file called 'bluez-utils' BUT I didn't have a file called 'bluez-utils'!
In another post I saw a reference to a file called 'bluetooth' so I tried editing that file.
The result of this was that my mouse was recognized, but I couldn't shut down my Eee.

At this stage I'm feeling just a tad frustrated, blindly following posts
and calling up terminal windows, editing what appear to be system
configuration files and saving them (with fingers crossed).

Does anyone have a straight-forward, written for Linux Dummies, set of
instructions for getting my Microsft Bluetooth mouse workingt? I hate to
say it but under XP it was plug-and-play.

While I'm talking about Linux for absolute beginners, can anyone point
me to some sort of tutorials so that I can get a bit of an understanding
of how this all works. For example, I'm so new at it I don't even know
how to download and install GIMP!!!

Sorry for the long post and for straying from the original topic, but I
do really want to get this really humming along, and have some
understanding of what I'm doing.
