Question #44714 on Ubuntu Eee changed:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu-eee/+question/44714

dth posted a new comment:
The screensaver isnt the only application thats being afflicted by this.

passwd wont work as user even with the fix applied.
Just try to change your password and you will get:
dth@dth-eeepc:~$ passwd
Changing password for dth.
(current) UNIX password:
passwd: Authentication service cannot retrieve authentication info
passwd: password unchanged
dth@dth-eeepc:~$ tail -n2 /var/log/auth.log
Nov 4 13:36:00 dth-eeepc unix_chkpwd[27608]: password check failed for user (dth)
Nov 4 13:36:00 dth-eeepc passwd[27607]: pam_unix(passwd:chauthtok): authentication failure; logname=dth uid=1000 euid=1000 tty= ruser= rhost= user=dth
