Freshmeadow proposed the following answer:
Greetings from Guelph. I got BBC radio to work by following the multimedia tutorial at the Ubuntu Forum http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=661833&highlight=Streaming+Multimedia for Hardy Heron. I chose the option in this tutorial of installing Gecko Mplayer.
On the BBC site, click the link you want to listen to. When the player window comes up and says "Stopped", click "Launch (or it might be Open, I can't remember right now) in Standalone Player". BBC streams take longer to buffer in Gecko or Mplayer than in RealPlayer, wait 20 -30 seconds and it should play for you. It works for me in Firefox 3 on a fresh Ubuntu EEE install on a EEE PC 701 4G.
Let us know what happens.
