Question #52106 on Ubuntu Eee changed:

dizzledryden proposed the following answer:
I've got an Eee 701 4G, and when I installed an older version of Ubuntu
Eee that had a shutdown error I wasted a lot of battery life. Because of
this I restored the default Xandros OS back onto my Eee PC. I noticed
you had an Eee 900 so there might be some differences to how I did it
and how you need to do it, but here is what I did:

1. Got my Asus Support CD out of my box, along with my big green manual
labelled "User Guide" (thought that might tell me how to do it - and i
was right!).

2. On a Windows XP computer, I inserted the disc and let the program
autorun. When it had finished loading, I clicked "Utilities" on the left
hand column and I selected "ASUS Linux USB Flash Utility". Then a little
box popped up and after telling it which letter my USB disk was at, I
selected "Copy EEE PC image files to USB flash and make it bootable",
and then I clicked OK. The drive was formatted and given the files. I
ejected it safely because I really didn't want this to corrupt.

3. On the Eee PC, I booted the USB drive, did what the stuff told me to
do and soon I was configuring my Eee like it was a new machine. Simple.
Only took 5 mins from the start of the Eee boot.

Note that the User Guide states I needed a USB flash drive bigger than
1GB, but they also say that the Eee might not be able to detect some
drives bigger than 2GB, but I used my 4GB SD Card in the SD card slot.
Worked fine. Just make sure that you format it back to normal using the
same utility afterwards, otherwise it's a bugger to reformat (trust me).

I hope the information above helped. I got it all from the User Guide
that came with my Eee so your User Guide (if you got one) will
definitely tell you how to do this for your Eee (chances are that they
are the same though). Ironically, I've just re-installed a newer version
of Ubuntu Eee (8.04.1) that has a fixed shutdown issue. It's awesome
with the Netbook Remix interface. However I am trying to find out a
solution to an external monitor issue atm, btw....

I'd be interested to see if it works. Could you keep me posted??
Good luck! -- Dizzle
