New to the Group

Hello all,

I am new to the group and thought I would introduce myself. My name is Ron Patterson and my call is W6FM. I have been a Linux user for 13 years. I started with Slackware and transitioned to Red Hat a year later. I have been running a Linux server at my qth for 12 years. A friend recently introduced me to Ubuntu and I am very impressed. I have been stuck with Windows on the desktop primarily due to my logging software. I am active on VHF and UHF and have almost 10,000 qsos in the log. Thanks to Joop's xlog, I am now able to break away from $Microsoft (I noticed you are lurking here Joop).

My skills are very limited as a programmer (I remember hello world in C ;-> well maybe a little more than that) but I am quite familiar with Linux and the RPM packaging system. I worked for a while supporting echoLinux. I did a little coding and patching but mostly I made packages for various Red Hat releases and tested compilation on various distributions including Debian. I also provided user support. I think I could make the switch to debs fairly easily.

Does the group have any projects in mind? I have a couple I would like to see. The wsjt package has been broken for some time now in Ubuntu. I am currently running the latest snapshot release on Hardy. The other is the svxlink server. In addition to the server, it provides a gui echolink client. This software is not currently available in Ubuntu. I am running the latest release on Hardy.

I look forward to participating in the group.

Ron
