Hey guys,

The dialect thing was really my idea. I personally don't know any Te Reo
myself. My second language is Japanese. So a lot of my inspiration comes
from that way of thinking.

Making multiple dialect translations at this stage seems unfeasible, as
just getting a core Maori translation is a feat in itself. I only want
to make our translations as across the board as possible, without
alienating anyone.

I spoke to Puhi, and she had a chat to her mates at Maori TV. They said
as long as you don't use any regional terms, anything written down
should be pretty straight forward as long as we pick generally accepted
spellings for WHA etc. But we will get it checked over by a couple of Te
Reo experts once we start submitting stuff though.

I'm working on getting Puhi online, but it's very hard at this stage
because of the technology she has available to her.

She lives out in Waiheke, so I need to get out there to install Ubuntu
on her PPC eMac. She can obviously use launchpad just from the Mac OS
environment, but we both feel that she would need to see the context of
some of the strings to get a good grasp of the translation.

Will keep you updated. The rest of the team is yet to be recruited. But
I will imagine the situation may be similar.

Our plan is to start advocating a Te Reo "version" of Ubuntu as early as
the Maverick official release. (as a work in progress)

Our first target audience is University of Auckland, as I know they have
Hardy installed on many of the machines and from there we will present a
demo to the guys at Maori TV to see what they think.

Typing this letter up I noticed that the Eng-NZ package needs some work
for the spell check as well.

I want to bring Ubuntu home to NZ. I want it to feel like it was meant
for us, by us for us. All of our people. One land, one people, one OS.
