Less than 24 bit means strong color-banding on gradients. It will mess
up every single icon, except if you switch to high-contrast, but we want
to stay with defaults, right? ;)
The combination of JPG compression and reduced colors would make no
sense. JPG works well on smooth stuff and has problems with strong color
contrasts (= the thing you will have more of after color reduction).
The file size worry should not take priority over delivering a good
looking document with screenshots wherever they are helpful.
