Where you see \\ when you open the file in gedit, these should be
changed to \ when it's pasted into Launchpad.  (I'd recommend doing a
find/replace in gedit to ensure you get then all changed properly and
consistently.)

I'm afraid I don't know anything about any of the translation tools.
The only tools I've used are Launchpad and po4a (which generates the
.pot file from our source .tex files).
