Re: Translation manual

Hello Daniel,
Below I will explain how to merge precise-e2 and quantal versions of the manual translation. If you want to merge lucid with precise or quantal, the steps are the same, just change the names.

1. Download https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu-manual/quantal/+pots/ubuntu-manual/de/+translate (29% translated). Rename it to manual-de-quantal.po 2. Download https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu-manual/precise-e2/+pots/ubuntu-manual/de/+translate (33% translated). Rename it to manual-de-precise-e2.po
3. In the terminal, use the following command:
msgmerge manual-de-precise-e2.po manual-de-quantal.po > manual-de-merged.po.
4. Open manual-de-merged.po in your favorite CAT (I use Lokalize, but poedit or others will be good as well) 5. In the CAT you will see a number of strings that are fuzzy, i.e. the translation is almoat, but not exactly, the same as the one from precise-e2. You can make the necessary changes and save them. 6. Upload manual-de-merged.po to Launchpad. Before you do that, in a text editor (gedit) copy the line with the export date, like "X-Launchpad-Export-Date: 2012-07-04 14:24+0000\n", from manual-de-quantal.po to manual-de-merged.po. You may first rename the merged file to de.po if you like, but it is not absolutely necessary.

Success! Let me know if you still have any questions.
Greets,
Hannie

Hi Hannie,

I'm curious about how you merged translations into each other. As I want
to reduce the work for me, I would be very interested in this. Can you
explain it more precisely to me?

Hello translators,
The precise version of the manual is ready to be translated, see [1].
Some of you have already started translating. For those of you who
haven't started yet, now is the moment.
As a member of Ubuntu Dutch Translators I have prepared a few things to
make it easier for my fellow translators. Here is what I have done (you
may profit from my tips):

I have split the whole document in portions (chapters/sections) and
added these to our wiki (just look at the table), see [2]
This is very convenient for those teams that have more than one
translator working on the manual. Every translator can add his name to
one or more chapters.

I also merged the lucid and oneiric versions with the precise version,
giving me a merged file that I can open in a translation tool like
Lokalize (or poedit, or your favorite tool). Here you get all the fuzzy
translations that were not transferred to precise because these strings
were not identical. I can copy those fuzzies to Launchpad and make the
changes there. I can also send this merged file to my fellow translators
if they want to use this method.

I hope this information is useful to you. If you have any questions,
please send them to the manual mailing list.
I wish all translators good luck and I really hope we get this manual
(LTS!) translated into many, many languages.
Regards,
Hannie
