Re: Name Change from Ubuntu Phone to Ubuntu Mobile?
Aloha everyone,
First of, how is it going everyone?! Great to see some activity in this
mailing-list.
But anyhow, back to topic.
There have been people saying we should rename this project[0] to Ubuntu
Mobile(UM) in a way to include the Ubuntu Tablet(UT) [1] project. While
this may be a reasonable assumption according to some people (and it does
have similarities) I think it's a wrong assumption to position UT under the
wings of UM. Phones and tablets have VERY different requirements.
First there is the difference in screen size. The average phone has about 4
to 4,5" touchscreen (full screen model. E.g.: Galaxy S, iPhone etc.)
compared to the average tablet screens of 8" and 10.1" (e.g. Apple iPad,
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 & 8).
Secondly besides the screen sizes, the phone *has* to have calling
capabilities, where as with the tablet it's not so clear. It has to be
connected to the telephony network (3G or something like that) which isn't
default. You have to use a headset, because you look ridicules holding a
tablet to your face for phone calls. Furthermore I think the current
concept used in tablets is VERY limiting. To me they are laptops/netbooks
without keyboards and they are threaded as big smartphones.
But it's more like Alan already more simplistically replied. It's not about
the name, it's about what we want to see on the different devices. So
please start making storyboards here [2] and here [3].
With metta, Chris
