i dont think that you can get the masses moving with a

if we want to make a dent aginst android and iOS it needs to be lean and
clean ... for your mom ... (i dont disagree that there might or even
should be add on apps for power users that you can install additionally
for such fine grained settings, i just dont think they should be in the
default)

as a developer you have a fully fledged ubuntu system under the hood and
can do with it whatever you like ... and extend it in all directions by
modifying a config from the commandline (or writing an addon UI tool for
doing that).
i personally expect us to easily surpass Win Phone and blackberry after
an official release and to at least grab some of the market share from
the big two, but we wont make it when focusing on power users which know
their way around anyway and have all the options a normal ubuntu gives
them under the hood ...
