It was, since the battery was drained to 0, no sign of life even when touching the power button. I had to disconnect the charger and reconnect it, then the charge started again, waited some time and then I could turn it on again.

aaahhh in that case thats not good.

what was the state of the phone when you awoke was it off? or on
    but no alarm

Maybe I was not clear, but the phone _was_ charging when I went to
    bed!
It went up to 100% and then suddenly it stopped charging and the
    battery got drained.

    Hello list,
It's the second time that happens to me, so it's time to investigate it.

    bq Aquaris e4.5, r22

Before going to sleep I usually connect the phone to the charger.
Yesterday night (it's not the first time that happens though) at first it
charged but at some point the battery got drained to 0.
This meant that this morning the alarm didn't rang and I stayed in bed a
bit too long (not that much to have trouble at work, fortunately).

I attach a picture of a screenshot of the battery settings, so you can see
    this strange behaviour.

I went to bed (and attached it to the charger) after 23, then it got
charged, and then suddenly something went wrong (but I was sleeping, so no
    way to notice it!).
I have had this already twice too with the E4.5 r22 of my wife (mine does
not show this, but I have another use profile, mine is all day attached
to my laptop from 7 to 22); the only new in your case is, that it
happens even while attached to power; but maybe after "full" the
charging is just switched off and it behaves like not attached to a
charger. I filed a bug issue (I do not have the number, search for it,
please). You should attache your case there.

BQ.com's support said to me that I should re-calibrate the battery. Which I now
have done with 4 times completely drained and charged to 100%. We will
    see if this help.

I would really like that this gets investigated _and solved_, because one
should be able to always rely at least on the alarm.
Maybe it helps running a script by crond and raise alarm, if battery is
    below 10%.
