Alan -- What device and image are you running?Can you be more specific about when this occurs? Are you working with the network menu when it happens? Any chance you could've accidentally brushed the AP in the network menu?
Also, can you check system settings and see if the access point in question shows up in the "Previous networks" list?
In the case where it picked an open hotspot next door, was the name the same as the secure hotspot that you had credentials for?
